Use of satellite images and machine learning in agricultural insurance

An efficient claims management system is very important for insurance companies and their customers.
In insurance lines with complicated property insurance policies, an important part of claims management is the assessment of the actual loss. This may result in high costs. Often valuable goods are involved, experts are required and the damage is geographically widespread or extensive, as in the case of environmental insurance.

Together with the leading agricultural insurance company in Central Europe, itestra GmbH has developed processes that use satellite data and machine learning to assess the severity of drought damage in agriculture on the one hand and to predict impending damage on the other.

  • Sentinel-2 and ECA&D satellite data
  • Machine learning approaches: Time series vs. fixed size dataset
  • Comparison with historical claims data from an agricultural insurance company
  • Automated damage assessment and prediction
